When a child is placed in the foster care system, sometimes all they have are the clothes on their back. And it's not always easy adjusting to a new life and a new family.
But as News 3's Collette Wieland explains, one non-profit group in Boulder City is giving kids a place to call home.
"I really want to go to college. I want to finish high school."
14-year-old Victoria didn't always have these goals. But since moving to St. Jude's Ranch for Children over two years ago, her life has taken on a new path.
"They have pushed me to be a better person. Everything has changed. I kind of wake up in the morning and go wow, look at me now."
Victoria is just one of many kids that live at the ranch. It's one of the only facilities in Southern Nevada that can keep a sibling group of foster children together.
St. Jude's is only able to take care of these kids with help from Southern Nevada.
"We have kids that come in and stay four or five months," says Jennifer Becker. "And we have kids that come in and stay 14 or 15 years."
But as the economy gets weaker, non-profit groups like St. Jude's Ranch start feeling the pinch.
"We still have the same amount of donors," assures Jennifer. "They're just not able to give as much."
Still, the ranch is trying to meet the needs of our community. In fact, they're about to open another foster home on their campus, one that will help pregnant teens gain parenting and life skills.
This was a project St. Jude's took on despite the economy.
"These girls need a home," says Jennifer. "Whether the stock market is crashing or not, they need somewhere to sleep."
News 3 has a fun way to help out the St. Jude's Ranch for Children. This Friday, tickets go one sale for the Las Vegas premier of the movie "Twilight."
100 percent of the proceeds from the screenings at South Point Hotel Casino will go directly to the kids at St. Jude's Ranch.
It's only $25 to attend the party and movie on November 20.
