Dan Ball reporting
Back in July we told you about a group of people from Las Vegas who started an adopt-an-Airmen program at Nellis Air Force Base. Nearly 100 families adopted 85 Airmen before they headed off to Iraq.
The Airmen received care packages upon leaving and since then the families have stayed in touch with the troops via e-mail.
Kathie and Tim Harrington adopted two Airmen in July and have shown their support with e-mail and gift packages. "Before they were deployed we took one of them and a friend from Nellis to dinner. And that was really fun and nice for our family," Kathie said.
The Harringtons were just one of dozens of families who took the time to send a heartfelt message to the Airmen of the 820th Red Horse Squadron, who are now stationed in Iraq.
Master Sergeant Bubba Monroe has been to Iraq three times. He understands the impact these messages have on our troops. "For someone back here to take the time to share that with them - it's a very valuable morale and motivational tool for us."
The people behind the camera, getting these messages of support to our brave men and women, are Jennifer Smith and Chemish Fisher. "Some of them go over there alone, ready to fight for their country and I think this program gives them love and encouragement," Jennifer said.
Chimaine Shadd and her son Isaiah were just passing through Silverton Casino and decided they needed to send their support and encouragement. "We are so thankful for what you guys are doing: sacrificing your lives, leaving your families," Chimaine said in her message to the troops. "It's so wonderful. We pray that you will continue to be strong and steadfast and we're praying for you here in Las Vegas. Have a wonderful holiday."
The group says there are still Airmen you can adopt. By next week the video messages will be Online for the troops to see in time for the holidays.
