CitiGroup helping those heading toward foreclosure

Updated:

Another bank is offering to help to folks right when they need it most.

CitiGroup announced Tuesday that over the next six months, they will contact 500,000 at-risk homeowners to help keep them in their homes. News 3's Marie Mortera explains that, especially in this valley, neighbors are welcoming the help.

Last January, News 3 visited a north valley neighborhood and had the pleasure of meeting Carolyn Banks. Thanks to a deal negotiated by the community group ACORN and Countrywide, she was able to keep her home.

"This is what I put my hard-earned sweat into and I'd like to keep it," says Carolyn.

Almost one year later, more companies - like CitiGroup - are offering help. The company will contact half--million customers who live in high foreclosure markets, including Las Vegas, between now and the next six months.

For home buyer Michelle Tillett, she believes it will help neighborhoods by preventing trashed, vandalized foreclosures.

"(I)t's just all-around a loss for the family and banks. So it's really in our best interest to help out as many as we can."

While some argue that the help being given to at-risk homeowners isn't fair, some experts say that more banks are realizing that receiving some of the payment is better than none at all.

And for the banks, people having the ability to stay in their home is the best part.

This deal comes on the heels of Foreclosure.com reporting a drop in foreclosures here in Clark County. Last month, about 2,600 homes went into foreclosure, down from September's 3,500.
