For a town that depends and survives upon tourism, things aren't looking good. In July, McCarran Airport saw its biggest drop in airline travel since 2002. News 3's Collette Wieland is live at the airport viewing strip to talk about passenger numbers being down for the last nine months.
When comparing July of 2008 to July of 2007, close to 370,000 fewer passengers stopped through Las Vegas - an 8.6 percent decline. Looking at McCarran's top five airlines, U.S. Airways is down 17 percent, and Southwest - which has done well in spite of high fuel costs - still saw fewer passengers, down by 5.6 percent. Delta is down 12.7 percent and United is down 8.9 percent.
American Airlines was the only airline to report an increase of 3.6 percent. Southwest Airlines and Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air were among the few airlines that turned a profit so far this year. But unfortunately, Allegiant's travel was down nearly six percent in July.
Arrivals and departures at McCarran's International Terminal were also down in July. But overall, they've seen an increase of passengers so far this year. This may be the result of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's efforts to campaign overseas.
