Revenue reports gathered for special session

Budget experts from various Nevada agencies are updating state revenue projections in preparation of next week's special legislative session.

Called by Gov. Jim Gibbons, the session hopes to find resolutions to the projected $1 billion revenue shortfall.

The governor and state lawmakers have already covered more than $900 million of the shortfall through 4.5 percent agency budget reductions and other money-saving steps.

However, $60 million to more than $100 million in additional savings needs to be accrued.

Nevada's Economic Forum meets Friday to review reports on revenue sources and produce a final report for the legislators to consider when the special session opens Monday.

The process is similar to efforts by the forum in advance of and during regular legislative sessions, except that the duration of this special session is said to last only one week.

Andrew Clinger, the governor's budget director, is coming up with one of the revenue reports for the Forum to consider. The lawmakers' fiscal experts are doing another one.

Additional reports will come in from the state Gaming Control Board and Taxation Department, and from the offices of the secretary of state and state treasurer.
