Colon makes first court appearance

Updated:

In a very quiet and somber tone, the man accused of beating a little girl to death, then throwing her body in a dumpster, appeared in front of a judge Monday.

Only short answers came out of Marc Colon Monday morning, as a judge questioned him and the prosecuting attorney. Colon was first in line to appear before Judge Karen Bennett-Haron through closed circuit TV.

The arraignment was short and to the point. Colon was assigned a private attorney, since the public defender is representing his girlfriend, Gladys Perez.

Both are charged with the murder of Perez's daughter, Crystal Figueroa. Speaking of Colon, Attorney Dayvid Figler says he and his client are mainly interested in one thing.

"My brief conversation that I've had with Marc I can say he's very concerned about what's going on and certainly wants to get a fair day in court, and hopefully we'll be able to accomplish that," said Figler

Figler says a number of situations could occur in a high-profile case like this, one of which is a change of venue. The trial could be heard in northern Nevada if a judge decides the two can't get a fair trial here.

There is also a chance it could be assigned to a grand jury, which would eliminate media coverage and the public from listening in.

Another change that has yet to be seen - whether or not Perez and Colon will go to trial together as planned. Colon is scheduled to be back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 30th.
