Unemployed? Pink slip mixers all the rage

With Nevada's unemployment rate in the double digits, it takes more than a good resume to get a job these days.

Sometimes it's not what you know but who you know. And Tuesday night, the ticket to success might have been a pink slip.

News 3's Gerard Ramalho reports that people are coming together for a unique job mixer called "pink slip parties." What they essentially do is bring employers and potential employees together.

In today's job market, most job seekers are simply told to apply online. But these mixers give candidates the chance to meet employers in person.

But don't call it a job fair; there are no lines to wait in, no forms to fill out, and if you want to enjoy a drink while you hand out your resume, that's okay too.

Pink slip mixers are taking place all over the country, connecting recruiters and employers with qualified candidates.

Alex Terry is an information technologies specialist who didn't expect to be suddenly laid off.

"For the last four years I worked for Fontainebleau. I started on the Fontainebleau project when I left Mandalay Bay when the MGM merger happened."

Obviously with more than 10 percent unemployment nationwide, Alex isn't alone.

But log on to PinkSlipMixers.com and you'll hear success stories from candidates. Employers agree that it's a great way to get a feel for someone's personality.

"You can actually spend time with people here today, give them some ideas, tell them what the jobs are, and learn more about them than at a job fair," says recruiter Louise Johnson.

Some of the people at the mixer said the event was also an opportunity to commiserate with others who have lost their jobs and to re-motivate to get back out in the market.

Pink slip mixers have also had successful results in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
