We may be as little as five years away from having a high-speed train that you can take from Las Vegas to Southern California. News 3's Angela Martin reports that the company behind the project says the train is on the fast track.
DesertXpress says it's ready to break ground on the high-speed rail train by next year. It would travel at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour between Las Vegas and Victorville, traveling mostly on tracks built next to the I-15 freeway.
The 180-mile trip would take about one hour and 20 minutes.
DesertXpress estimates that the project would cost up to $4 billion to build and estimates that by the year 2015, more than 10 million people would ride the train each year.
DesertXpress says President Obama's commitment to high-speed rail projects gives the company hope that they can build and complete the project in about four years.
If you want to learn more about the project or give your opinion on it, attend the public hearing Tuesday night from 5:30 pm to 8 pm at the Hampton Inn on Dean Martin Drive and Tropicana. There are also public hearings scheduled for Wednesday in Barstow and Thursday in Victorville.
This high-speed train is different from the Mag-Lev train we've talked about; DesertXpress says a Mag-Lev would cost anywhere from $16 billion to $52 billion. Its proposed high-speed train is a fraction of the cost at $4 billion.
